IN CONVERSATION WITH PETAL DE LA RETA
Some collaborations happen naturally.
When Petal, founder of The Ayú Alchemist, first reached out about stocking Blyss in her beautiful Yunbenun (Magnetic Island) store, I had no idea it would become the beginning of such a meaningful collaboration.
As we spoke, it quickly became clear that our connection went far beyond a shared love of beautiful design. We discovered a shared philosophy—a belief that nature has always held the answers, that beauty begins with intention, and that when we slow down and reconnect with the natural world, we remember that so much of the medicine we seek already exists within us.
It felt only natural to expand our collaboration, and today I'm so excited to share The Ayú Alchemist with the Blyss community.
Handcrafted between New Zealand and Yunbenun (Magnetic Island), The Ayú Alchemist creates botanical skincare using carefully selected natural and organic ingredients, blending traditional plant wisdom with modern formulations designed to nurture both skin and spirit.
To celebrate our collaboration, I sat down with founder Petal De La Reta to talk about her journey, botanical rituals, conscious living, the inspiration behind The Ayú Alchemist × Blyss Ritual Pack, and the story behind one of my favourite everyday rituals—her Herbaceous Wisteria Oja.

Kate: Was there a particular turning point when you realised creating botanical products could become something much larger than a personal practice?
Petal: Along my own healing journey, I found myself volunteering in a survivor centre in Cambodia, teaching women botanical facials, yoga and English so they could apply for work in wellness spaces, hospitality and other opportunities beyond sex work.
We didn't have products available for training, so I started making everything myself. What began as a practical solution slowly became something much more meaningful. A few years later I found myself with a kitchen full of botanical formulations before, completely by chance, meeting a cosmetics manufacturer who encouraged me to create them professionally.
The products already had a story. From there, The Ayú Alchemist naturally evolved.

Kate: Nature is at the heart of everything you create. Why do you believe botanical ingredients are so powerful?
Petal: Plants have an incredible intelligence. They've been nourishing, protecting and restoring us for centuries, and I wanted to honour that wisdom rather than overcomplicate it.
When we return to nature, we often find exactly what we've been searching for. My formulations are intentionally simple, allowing every botanical ingredient to do what it does best while working in harmony with the skin.
For me, it's never about following trends—it's about creating products that genuinely support both the skin and the nervous system through the quiet power of plants.
Kate: Your products feel like more than skincare—they feel like an invitation to slow down. What does ritual mean to you?
Petal: Ritual isn't about adding another task to your day. It's about becoming present within the moments that already exist.
Even taking a few mindful minutes to cleanse your skin or massage in a serum can become an opportunity to reconnect with yourself. Those small moments have a way of changing how we move through the rest of the day.
I think we often underestimate how transformative those quiet rituals can be.

Kate: Your Herbaceous Wisteria Oja has become an absolute must-have of mine. What inspired you to create it, and what does it smell like in your own words?
Petal: I've always believed scent has the power to shift how we feel. Herbaceous Wisteria Oja was created to capture a feeling rather than simply a perfume—a sense of aliveness, beauty and connection to nature.
To me, it smells like wandering through a garden in full bloom. Delicate wisteria is layered with vibrant botanical notes, fresh herbs, warm spices and soft amber to create something that's both uplifting and grounding.
I wanted it to feel effortless—something you reach for each morning that quietly becomes part of you, leaving behind a beautiful memory long after you've left the room.

Kate: You recently opened the doors to your beautiful space on Yunbenun (Magnetic Island). What inspired you to create it?
Petal: I've always dreamed of creating a space where people could truly experience The Ayú Alchemist beyond the products themselves.
It's somewhere people can come to slow down, receive a botanical facial, experience LED light therapy, create their own bespoke botanical fragrance, explore our complete skincare collection, discover Beauty Tofu, browse my clothing collection and now, beautifully, Blyss Studios too.
It feels less like a store and more like a sanctuary—a place where people can reconnect with themselves through beauty, nature and ritual.

Kate: Our collaboration has always felt incredibly organic. What do you think it is about Blyss and The Ayú Alchemist that makes the partnership feel so natural?
Petal: I think it comes back to our values. Blyss shares the same philosophy that sits at the heart of The Ayú Alchemist—creating with intention, honouring nature and encouraging people to live more consciously. You've created something truly beautiful with Blyss, and I immediately felt a genuine alignment between our philosophies.
Kate: Together we've created The Ayú Alchemist × Blyss Ritual Pack. Tell us about what people can expect inside and why you chose these particular products.
Petal: We wanted to create a ritual that felt simple, beautiful and deeply nourishing—something people could easily incorporate into everyday life without feeling overwhelmed.
The collection brings together four of my favourite formulations: the Shyam Rose & Roots Ritual, which works beautifully as both a daily cleanser and botanical treatment mask, the Rasa Tonic to replenish and prepare the skin, the Vitamin C Super Serum to brighten and restore radiance, and the Vitamin C Cream to deeply nourish and lock in hydration.
Each product complements the next, creating a complete botanical ritual designed to support healthy, radiant skin while encouraging a slower, more mindful approach to self-care.

Kate: Finally, what do you hope someone takes away after experiencing The Ayú Alchemist, whether that's through a skincare ritual, a facial or simply wearing your Oja?
Petal: More than anything, I hope they feel connected—to themselves, to nature and to the present moment.
Beautiful skin is a wonderful outcome, but it's never been the true purpose behind what I create. The greatest gift is creating space to slow down.
If someone finishes a ritual feeling calmer, lighter and more grounded than when they began, then I've done exactly what I hoped to do.

If you're planning a visit to Yunbenun (Magnetic Island), be sure to experience Petal's beautiful new space—a sanctuary dedicated to botanical beauty, conscious living and the restorative power of nature.
Alongside the complete collections from The Ayú Alchemist and Beauty Tofu, you'll find her signature botanical fragrances, bespoke 'Make Your Own' Botanical Fragrance experiences, botanical facials, LED light therapy, her thoughtfully designed clothing collection, and a curated selection of Blyss Studios pieces.
It's a place to slow down, reconnect and immerse yourself in the world of The Ayú Alchemist.
